The narrow valleys of the Bistrița river and tributaries are geographically separated in the mountains between areas of mountain pasture and forests. This zone is ethnographically very homogeneous along the course of the Bistrita river from Brosteni to Piatra Neamț. During the the 17th century the local population of shepherds increased following immigration from Transylvania.
